The Best Halloween Traditions According to #teamBASYS

The BASYS team loves celebrating Halloween. In the office, we have a variety of fun activities. We dress up with prizes for best overall individual and group costumes, we have a chili cook-off, and employees are encouraged to bring their kids to the office for desk-to-desk trick-or-treating.

What do you do for Halloween? Here’s how #teamBASYS likes to spend the spookiest night of the year:

Stacey

“My family loves Halloween! My favorite traditions are over the top decorations, indoors and out, including a haunted house outside. We always have a family Halloween party filled with fun, food, and—of course—trick-or-treating. Lastly, it’s not Halloween if you don’t watch Hocus Pocus.”

Brenda

“I’m one of these weird people with kids around here, so my new tradition is picking them up from school and bringing them to our office trick-or-treat. We’ll usually order a Papa Murphy’s Jack-O-Lantern pizza for dinner, then head out to our favorite neighbors’ houses for a little more trick-or-treating. One of my daughter’s has a peanut allergy, so we do comb through her candy to make sure she doesn’t have a reaction, but that’s okay, because we get to keep that candy for ourselves and peanut candy is the best candy anyway.”

Brenda

“I always dress up with my kids. Last year, I was Genie and my daughter was Jasmine, and before that we’ve been King Triton and Ariel, a strawberry and a banana . . . you get what I’m saying.”

George

“We celebrate Dia de los Muertos. You make a little altar with pan de muerto, and put marigolds and candles on it to guide the dead. We leave offerings that the deceased enjoyed—candies, drinks, music, that sort of thing. It’s less about being spooky and more about honoring the circle of life. The kids do still like to trick-or-treat, though.”

Sean

“Leave milk and cookies out on Halloween night so they’re ready for Santa Claus on December 25th.”

Lauren

“I’m originally from St. Louis, and it’s a tradition there that, when you’re trick-or-treating, you tell a joke before you get candy. Well, when I was in college, I volunteered at a trunk-or-treat, and got a really weird look when I asked a kid to tell me a joke. I still think it’s a great tradition though.”

Cari

“I love handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, in AND out of the office, and seeing all the kids in their costumes. It doesn’t get much better than dressing up in clothes and having people give you massive amounts of free candy. I also love all our BASYS traditions, like pumpkin-carving and the Annual Chili Cook-off”

Christy

“Leading up to Halloween, my husband and I watch as many terrible Halloween movies as possible. Then, on the actual day, we love to make junk food and watch scary movies with all the lights out. My favorite scary movie is The Strangers—that could really happen to someone! I think my love for being scared comes from my father terrorizing me on my 6th birthday with a fright fest of Nightmare on Elm Street and the Friday the 13th movies.”

Jamaal

“Growing up, we’d always buy the normal, cheap candy AND the king size candy. My brothers and I would try to scare kids that came to the door trick-or-treating, and if they didn’t run away, they earned a big piece of candy. Now, I like to sit in the dark and watch scary movies the night before Halloween. My girlfriend thinks I’m crazy.”

Melissa

“My husband and I like to light the firepit in front of our house and pass out candy. Our dogs, Rocky and Roman, enjoy dressing up for the trick-or-treaters. This is Roman’s first Halloween! They have a bunch of costumes—a sunflower, a devil, a lion, etc.—but they haven’t decided which ones they want to wear yet.”
